Another comic has died. Patrice O’Neal, 41, died after complications from a stroke. He had diabetes, high blood pressure, and was obese. O’Neal was a regular guest on Colin Quinn’s “Tough Crowd” years ago. He was a good comedian – spontaneous, genuine, fun loving, and funny. A while back Greg Giraldo also died. He was a great comedian – probably one of the best in the country and also a regular on Tough Crowd. I saw Giraldo do standup in ’05 but he was drunk or on something then.

Tough Crowd was a great show. There were so many excellent shows that are no longer on, many of them on Comedy Central. They seem to last a few years and then they’re gone — they’re almost too good – not dumbed down enough for the American public. With that said, here are some of the best comedy shows that are no longer on the air.

Buzzkill: Classic hidden camera show on MTV that preceded Jackass. Travis Draft and crew pulled pranks on unsuspecting public. Classic bits included pretending to transport a kidney in a cooler and dropping it (if I remember right) while stopping at 7-11 for a snack.

Trigger Happy TV – out of England, this show starred Dom Joly doing bizarre stunts and interviews, getting incredible reactions from bystanders. Watch the clips on Youtube.

The Man Show – Adam Corolla and Jimmy Kimmel will never do anything remotely as funny. With the Juggies and bits such as trying to end women’s suffrage and, the self-deprecating duo was pure gold.

Tough Crowd – Colin Quinn’s roundtable show was just a bunch of comedians talking about current events, but it worked. They had a great rapport, and constantly ripped on each other. Regulars included Jim Norton, Patrice O’Neal, Greg Giraldo, Rich Vos, Nick DiPaolo, and Keith Robinson.

Late Show with Craig Kilborn – better than any of the current talk shows, Kilborn had a unique sense of humor. He quit years ago and other than a cameo in “Old School,” hasn’t been seen since.

Too Late with Adam Corolla – a late night show, this show lasted just one season but was excellent.

Dog Bites Man – an obscure, short lived show about a fake news team, they once lectured a college journalism class, giving outlandish advice. The class thought the show was real. Who knew Zach Galifianakis would be the one to make it big.

Tom Green Show – Canadian rose to stardom with brazen skits and interviews. Green has since made several movies that have all bombed.

Crossballs – This show was a fake news/debate show. The great part about it was that the guests thought it was real.

Jaime Kennedy Experiment – Another hidden camera prank show. Kennedy once posed as a lifeguard and waved everyone out of a pool, then proceeded to act like he was urinating, making some swimmers laugh and leaving others horrified.

Reno 911 – Fake reality bumbling cops show was a takeoff on the show “Cops.”

Jackass – combination of stunts and pranks led to three movies and multiple spinoffs.

Sarah Silverman Show – the show was a little too strange, but it featured the multi-talented Sarah Silverman.

I decided to cut and paste this series of emails because it’s typical of what women in D.C. are looking for. Everyone’s a chemistry major. The idea of going for a drink on a first date instead of dinner is a good time saver, but it also shows a certain closed-mindedness. I think chemistry is great – I just don’t believe that you can expect someone to sweep you off your feet in the first five seconds of meeting them. Have you ever thought that if you don’t feel any chemistry, maybe it’s your fault? That’s why older women are a good option. At least they want to/know how to have fun.

This one is good looking, smart, and seems great. I can tell, though, she’s looking for Superman. Do you think she’ll give Clark Kent a chance?

Definitely no way.

Hi Cathy,

I love it. We’re already planning our second date. A drink seems like a good idea. I know that women nowadays expect their date to be Brad Pitt or Fabio riding in on a white horse otherwise there’s “not enough chemistry.” They care more about the five second first impression than a potential lifetime of happiness. I’ve been told there’s “no connection” more often than Pepco during a snowstorm. Anyway, sounds good. I’m free Tuesday or Wednesday for a drink in D.C.

Hey Mike,

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving break. I am not sure what my schedule is yet for this week as I just returned home and it’s 11pm and I have a lot of catch up to do! What if we just meet for a short bit to grab a coffee/cocoa or a drink somewhere. I honestly have met a few very nice guys on Match (all have been pretty much what they have said) but I haven’t found chemistry which I think is very important. For me this is something you can tell fairly early on if there is some spark there worth pursuing and then we could set up dinner for another night. So what do you think?

I’ve lost all respect for ESPN. I watched SportsCenter most of the morning today and not once was there even a reference to the Jerry Sandusky Penn State molestation scandal. On ESPN’s web page, there’s one AP wire story on it buried along the right side of the page. This is one of the biggest sports stories of all time and ESPN is ignoring it because of money. Yesterday they probably spent 20 seconds on it in between college football highlights. The Grand Jury report speaks for itself.

Kudos to Mike Wise of the Washington Post and others who say that coach Joe Paterno should have some responsibility for not bringing the crime that was reported to him to the attention of the police in 2002.

You have to wonder if ESPN is afraid of a lawsuit. ESPN was sued by former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach for libel and slander after the network reported that Leach mistreated a player. Still, ESPN could just report on the facts of the Sandusky case and make sure to say “allegedly” in the appropriate spots. Otherwise, ESPN is helping to cover up the crimes. This story better be all over “Outside the Lines” next week and on into the future, but to fail to mention it at all a day after it breaks is a travesty, no matter how much they are afraid of a lawsuit. You can’t obsess over tattoos and other minor scandals and then ignore allegations of a prominent football coach sexually assaulting multiple children.

Washington, D.C. may not be the best sports town in the country, but it deserves a lot more credit than it usually gets. In fact, D.C. is an excellent sports town that supports more teams in more sports than just about any city in the U.S.

The Washington Post, a marketing machine that bores its tentacles further and further into the belly of local radio, TV, and the internet all the time, recently had the gall to call D.C. a “mediocre” sports town.

Don’t pay attention to such drivel, though, because the writers behind the series for the most part, namely Dan Steinberg and Mike Wise, have only been in town for a few years, and they overlook many of the aspects of D.C. sports fandom that make D.C. sports fans unique. Virtually none of the columnists who criticize D.C. as a sports town, many of whom live off the reputation of the once great Post, hail from the area.

D.C. sports fans shouldn’t be judged on their teams’ lack of recent championships or blamed because people want to live here. Examine the loyalty of fans through good times and bad, and you’ll find that D.C. stacks up well with almost any major city. Washington hasn’t won a major pro sports championship in 20 years other than the four Major League Soccer trophies DC United took home between 1996 and 2004. Yet D.C. fans are remarkably passionate in supporting their teams.

How many cities have the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, plus major college basketball and football? Not many. We have the Redskins, Wizards, Caps, Nats, D.C. United, Maryland and Georgetown basketball, Terps football, and a whole lot more. Given what we’ve had to cheer for, D.C. has turned out to be a great sports city.

Here are some ways to improve the Howard Stern show. This was prompted because Sirius cut off my service for not paying, but I’ve been in a dispute with them because they’ve been charging me $2 for each bill they send. I think listeners should not stand for this. I’ve contacted Sal, Richard, and a bunch of others but they all say it’s not their problem. I’ve been listening for 30 years, by the way, longer than anyone on the show except for Howard, Robin, and Fred.

By the way, I don’t care about being cut off now because the show is on vacation again. I write articles, so why don’t I just cut and paste and reprint old articles?

Tell Howard to actually do a cutting edge interview like he used to instead of kissing ass to everyone. Howard is more of an ass-kisser now than Letterman.

Tell Howard it’s AERO-Smith, not ARROW-Smith.

Get rid of whiny, uninteresting, awful Lisa G.

Have more comedians sit in on the news like the old days – Gilbert Gottfried, Richard Lewis, Norm MacDonald.

More strippers, but with interesting angles like the old days.

More Evil Dave and the guy who imitates Schwarzenegger.

Less George Takei. He’s unbelievably boring and Howard overrates him because he liked Star Trek.

Hire someone for Howard 100 News who is either under 70, interesting, or both.

Bring back the roasts. Comedy Central stole your idea.

Tell Howard not to go on vacation every other day.

Don’t play commercials on both channels at once.

More Sour Shoes.

More Fred.

Gary needs to show his personality more like the old days. He’s gotten fat and complacent.

Less Shuli, J.D., Benji, Will Murray, and Jason Kaplan. You couldn’t imagine five more boring people. Stuttering John and Jackie were a lot more interesting.

This has been going on for many years, but less Dancing with the Stars and American Idol.

More prank calls from Sal and Richard. Where have they been?

Get rid of Jay Thomas show, Geektime, What’s Worth Watching, the Intern Show.

Keep Black on Black.

Until a few years ago, NFL Primetime, an hour-long Sunday night highlight show of NFL action hosted by Chris Berman and Tom Jackson, was one of the greatest shows in TV history. Not sports history, TV history. They covered most games with a series of highlights over inspiring music, and they showed more than any other network. Now it’s done in bits and pieces. It feels like Berman and T.J. have been demoted. While Trent Dilfer is a nice addition, they only show a few games in depth, and today they actually showed just one highlight each from several games. It’s terrible.

The NBC show starts too early, so a lot of the games are still in progress, and the cast of characters act like deer in headlights, while Dan Patrick thinks he’s too smooth. The NFL Network is ok but it doesn’t have the music and it doesn’t have Berman and T.J. Plus the NFL Network is dominated by far too many Cowboys. Maybe ESPN isn’t allowed to do an hour long highlight show because of NBC or the NFL Network holding the rights, but either way, the Blitz is lacking.

“Grantland,” Bill Simmons’ sports and pop culture website, doesn’t add much that other sports websites provide, and in fact it’s pretentious and unnecessary. Simmons, the Sports Guy of ESPN’s Page 2, is a good sports writer and funny, but way too Boston-centric and when he strays too much into pop culture the site loses its appeal. The writing on the site is nothing special, just a collection of random articles. The plain, white background looks boring. The site gets promoted endlessly on ESPN and that time must be incredibly expensive. The promos, again, show how hip the site is trying to be. I doubt if Grantland Rice was trying to be cool. He let his writing speak for itself.

I don’t have much reason to read this website, but when I did stumble across an article, it was pretty bad. I’m not even sure what this article about Chris Mullin was trying to say, but these were my comments on it after it came out:

“This article is ridiculous. You compare Mullin to Nash and J.J. Barea because they are both white. they have nothing in common. The league is so much more athletic now? You make it sound like Mullin played in the 1950s. The league is not more athletic now than it was in the 80s and 90s, and Mullin would be just as good now as he was then, and possibly better. In the 80s, mostly tall, frail guys controlled the paint? In the 80s, Ewing, Robinson, and Olajuwon came into the league. Centers were much better back then. You cite Andrew Bynum as a shot-blocking brick wall? Unbelievable. There are fewer good jump shooters today, which would make Mullin more valuable. You say his decline at the end of his career was because the game changed! Could it have changed that much in 15 years? The level of play now is worse than it was in the 80s and 90s. And right next to your article was one on espn.com by Hubie Brown, saying that Artis Gilmore, who played in the NBA in the 80s, was the 2nd strongest center ever. And if Mullin was so unathletic, what about Run TMC? It wasn’t Run TM.”
